Eye Castle sits at the heart of one of Suffolk’s prettiest market towns, just a short drive from Park Hotel Diss. The Norman motte-and-bailey earthworks are topped by a Victorian folly, and the climb up rewards you with sweeping views over Eye and the surrounding countryside.
A Norman castle with Victorian additions
The castle began as a Norman motte-and-bailey fortification soon after the Conquest. Over the centuries it fell into ruin, and in the 19th century a folly was built on the mound. Today the steep motte and the views from the top are the main draw for visitors.
Exploring Eye town
The town of Eye is well worth exploring in its own right, with the magnificent church of St Peter and St Paul, the timber-framed Guildhall and a scattering of independent shops and pubs. It’s a quiet, characterful place for a relaxed half-day out.
