Sutton Hoo is one of the most important archaeological sites in Britain — the burial place of an Anglo-Saxon king and his magnificent ship. Cared for by the National Trust, it makes a memorable day trip from Park Hotel Diss.
The story of the ship burial
In 1939, excavations here uncovered the imprint of a great ship and a treasure-filled burial chamber, transforming our understanding of Anglo-Saxon England. The site tells that story through the burial mounds, viewing tower, exhibition hall and full-size sculpture of the ship.
Grounds and views
There are walks across the estate with views over the River Deben, woodland trails and the historic Tranmer House to explore. It’s a site that rewards a relaxed, unhurried visit.
